1. Africa's fragile health systems

The first case of the coronavirus in sub-Saharan Africa has been confirmed in Nigeria. The patient is an Italian citizen who works in Nigeria and flew into the commercial city of Lagos from Milan on 25 February. Authorities say he is stable with no serious symptoms and is being treated at a hospital in the city.  Algeria and Egypt have also confirmed cases of the disease.

2. Locust invasion

The invasion of locusts in East Africa is likely to cause the region's worst humanitarian crisis in recent times, an international charity says. The pests consume their own body weight in food every day. The UN's food agency says this is the worst locust invasion in East Africa in 25 years.
