African Easter Celebration
When the 40 days of lent is completed, it is normal for Africans to celebrate Easter with their loved ones.
For many people, this is the time to go church every morning and evening for stations of the cross prayers,
for others this is the timefor reflection on Jesus Christ-his suffering and his sacrifice, his life, death,
burial and resurrection. And yet for others, this means holidays, merriments or plain nothing.
What is Easter? In African context, Easter means a lot to most people, the celebration is huge and the rebirth
of Christ touches every home. During this season, we not only treat this as a commemoration of events that
occurred a long time ago. We look at it as a living symbol of Christianity. It symbolises the period when we pass
through death into a new life, and join Christ in his sufferings and death through different means.
However, most people still fail to see the importance of the Easter. Some do not understand the process of going
through the sufferings, pains and death of Christ, while others wait for the bell to announce the dawn of Easter.
Although Easter is just one day, which mark the day that Jesus resurrected from the death after three days,
the pre and post Easter activities should be respected as well, and observed as a spiritual transformational period.
The 40 days of lent and 50 days of Pentecost can be regarded as a very important period in the Christian calendar.
In Africa in particular, there is a deep connection between Easter and baptism. This is because,
this season is consider as a season or rebirth. Also, in the past, the season of lent was used by
catechumens for baptism. The logic is clear, if baptism means washing away your sins and
making you a new person, what other time will be more appropriate to baptise someone?
Easter in Africa is very different and Eggs got nothing to do in the celebration. In Africa, the Easter vigil is attended
by hundreds of people. Most parishes start the vigil around 3PM to finish by 6 PM. This is usually because either
there might be no lights, due to the normal electricity power failure or other people want to get home quick and prepare
for the big day. The churches are decorated by various traditional clothes made up in the form of butterflies,
flowers, banana trees etc. Everyone in church knows the hymns that would be sang on such days.
These are usually accompanied by the beating of the drum and the very high-pitched sounds made by women.
