IndieRE #173 by Radio Študent, Ljubljana
Today’s radio show is brought to you by Radio Študent from Ljubljana, Slovenia. We'll start it off with Mrk, an international six-piece led by drummer Gaj Bostič, and their debut self-titled and self-released album. The seven songs on the album were created in the diverse space between jazz, prog rock and electronics with some pop and a hint of metal.
Then we move to Kormorana, a high flying rock trio and their second album Leto, consisting of one instrumental song and eight songs with lyrics entirely sung in Slovenian, a rare thing in the genre. They play mostly a slower, sometimes also softer or spacy stoner rock with excursions into harder parts and they also include some funnier bits and pieces. Besides the rare use of our language in this genre, this is also quite a rare stoner band in Slovenia.
Then we'll listen to ambiental music from the producer Katja Kavaš who creates mainly techno under the name Kathron. Recently she’s released her first studio work Dahlesing through the label Clockwork Voltage, an EP of one ambiental and one techno piece. After Kathron comes beatmaker Blaž Gracar who released a short EP with four songs called Bingles 24-25. His music is very specific and quickly recognisable by its ease and catchiness. Next up will be the music by the rapper Wera Bestrd and producer Timo or Timo Produkcije, who have self-released a new album titled Biblija za hejterje.
One section of the broadcast will be dedicated to jazz. We’ll listen to two longer compositions, one by Kristijan Krajnčan Quartet and one by Maj Kavšek. Drummer, cellist and composer Kristijan Krajnčan has released Honey Sparks In The Dark through the record label Celinka, an album prepared as a quartet together with the trumpet player Tomaž Gajšt, sax player Boštjan Simon and double bass player Robert Jukič. The album was inspired by honey and sparkles.
Maj Kavšek has released Minor Flaw through the label Jazz Cerkno Records, a collection of compositions, as written in the notes, inspired by the sounds, noises, melodies, and rhythms of everyday environments. The music was recorded live at the 30th Jazz Cerkno Festival in May 2025 by composer and trumpet player Maj Kavšek, sax player Julius Gawlik, double bass player Tjan Šoštarič and drummer Lenny Rehm.
We return to guitars with zbrucz, a screamo band, who’s four members describe themselves as quite an emotional and crying ensemble. They’ve self-released two new songs on a split with the band Falesia. After zbrucz comes Darla Smoking, a post-dub duo of drummer Brgs and producer Nac who have self-released their last album ever called New Mescaline, a good-spirited send-off in the hope for a better future.
Beatmaker Obito will be next. Bor Prokofjev is the young producer and dancer’s name and he’s self-released a new album titled CuRsedOut GlItches. The last song of the show will be a bit of a banger called OpalDub prepared by the producer Jovonanovo or Jovica Novković, also a member of the electronic-rap duo Primal Alchemy. This time he worked solo and created a danceish single, released in September last year by the bass movement Gonobeats on the Various Artists Beats Academy Compilation.
