notes from the producer:

I am listening to Istanbul, intent, my eyes closed;

Then suddenly birds fly by,

Flocks of birds, high up, with a hue and cry,

While the nets are drawn in the fishing grounds

And a woman’s feet begin to dabble in the water.

Orhan Veli wrote this poem around 70 years ago that Istanbul’s population was 3 million and there were no huge constructions and 24-hour-traffic jam in this historical city that he could easily and clearly hear the sounds of birds, water and fishing nets. Now, 14 million people live in Istanbul, is the third largest city by population in the world. I live in this chaotic city has huge ghettos, gated communities, gentrification, social movements, skyscrapers, shopping malls, traffic jam, homeless immigrants, isolated suburbs and pollution. This 55-minute-field recording mix represents my one day in Istanbul. I have recorded my daily routine that begins with my room…
