African nations are taking tough action to restrict the spread of coronavirus and are increasingly taking steps to protect their economies too. With thirty-six African countries currently with recorded cases, the government continues to roll out increasingly robust measures to halt the spread and contain the pandemic that has claimed a number of lives.

In South Africa, authorities have been warned that anyone violating the rules faces six months' imprisonment or a heavy fine. 

Nine more provinces in Algeria will be placed under daily curfew from 18:00 GMT (19:00 local time) to 06:00 GMT, starting on Saturday, both Blida and Algiers capital are already under curfew, with full lockdown in force in Blida.

Eritrea, with six confirmed cases, is shutting down all schools and all public transport has been banned - as have all commercial flights. Gatherings of more than 10 are also prohibited
